HUNTLY NORDIC SKI CLUBNEWSLETTER No. 6February 2001 |
|
What an excellent season we’ve had so far. Nearly 60 skiable days in the Clash, & there is still time for plenty more snow. A typical Clash season sees about 40 skiable days. Unfortunately a brief period of no snow saw both Gordonstoun races postponed, then too much snow & blizzard conditions forced us to cancel the HNSC Open Championships. However we did manage to go ahead with our Ski O event, & Western Track went ahead with their Time Trial.
Lester, Sandy & myself took 17 Forestry Commission employees & their families onto the Clash trails in an attempt to show the Commission what valuable resource they have for nordic skiers. I think it was a good bit of PR & hopefully it will have a good knock on effect on the development of the trails. They seem to have enjoyed themselves & it earned us all a bottle of wine each.
On a less positive note a skier I met in the forest told me that he asked a well known ski/mountain shop where was the nearest forest ski trails were & was told Norway! Fortunately for our skier a sled dog person overheard this conversation & pointed him in the direction of the Clash. I was horrified that a supposedly specialised ski shop could be so ill informed. There are plenty of places in Scotland to mountain tour & forest ski.

Olwen Thorn & Emily Skitmore returned from a successful pre Christmas training camp with the British Junior Cross Country Ski Squad in Austria. The venue was changed at the last minute to Obertilliach due to a lack of snow in Tauplitzalm. After time trials, both Olwen & Emily were selected to represent GB at the Lowlanders International Criterium to be held in Ramsau, Austria in March. Unfortunately Olwen’s Highers will stop her attending, but Emily will fly the flag for Huntly. |
|
Training in Austria |
Ian Fairweather was also selected but has also had to decline his place because he does not feel he will be fit enough. |
Nicola Walker, the Squad Manager, travelled up from Ayrshire in January to ski for the first time in the Clash. She was impressed by the skiing there & hopes to pay regular visits. PT
Western Track Ski Club made the journey up from the Glasgow area to hold their Time Trial in the Clash. In the past they have held this event at the Glencoe Ski Centre but ran into logistical problems holding it there. A change of venue was called for & they decided to try their luck in the Clash. Each competitor had up to five attempts over a 1.3km course, the fastest lap won.
The race was freestyle over a lentgh of 1.3km.Total climb was 36m/lap. Conditions were sunny with a dry light wind, the air temperature as 0°C and snow temperature -1°C

The results show that competition was close & several exciting rivalries developed. Brian Adams pipped Chris Barton to the men’s title gaining revenge for last season’s defeat by Chris in the HNSC Open. Roy Young just missed out on a medal placing but was pleased at beating the Ladies champion & thus keeping Olwen in her place.
I hear that the fiercest tussle of the day was the ding dong battle between Lester Standen & Andy Cox. Ever since this race Lester has made efforts to perfect his skating technique & is now something of a Skate Monster. The youngest competitor, Hugh Standen, displayed a lot of determination in completing three circuits & will soon be giving his brother Alex & dad some stiff competition.

Ski Orienteering, Sat 20th Jan 2001.
The event took place in good snow conditions and fine weather. Two courses were set up, a long one of about 12.5 km and a short one of about 4 km. Unfortunately the turnout was low, and although many people were skiing in the forest that day, few seemed to know that the event was taking place. However, we did attract skiers from Aberdeen and Glasgow as well as locals. Those who took part obviously enjoyed themselves very much, especially Brain Adams and Simon Beeson both of whom, having failed to copy the obscure 12th marker from the master map, then had to ski a further 8.5 km to get it. Thank you to all those who took part for making it worthwhile. Lester Standen

Huntly Skier Helps Top Norwegian Skier.
|
Gillian Sowden poses with some members of the Norwegian men’s cross country ski team. They were training in Geilo when they decided they wanted to do a spot of Biathlon but didn’t have any rifles. Gillian stepped in & lent hers to Thomas Alsgaard, one of the world’s top cross country skiers & standing to Gillian’s left in the photo. No doubt she gave him some tips on how to shoot straight in return for tips on how to ski very fast. Can anyone identify the other skiers? STOP PRESS: Gillian recently came third in the Norwegian Junior Biathlon Champs, only 10sec behind the winner & former Junior World Champion. This is great preparation for the Junior World Champs in Russia this March. |

Full Moon Stomps.
With excellent planning the Stomp on the 9th Jan began just as the Lunar Eclipse started. To add to the lack of light, conditions were hard & icy requiring survival skiing techniques on the descents. Other than a small cut to Grahame Osgood’s hand we all survived & returned to the cars just as the Moon re-appeared – impeccable timing. Thanks go to Dick Sowden who arranged sandwiches at the Gordon Arms in Rhynie where we rounded off the evening with some ski chat.
On the 9th Feb we stomped around Huntly with Roy as our guide. The golf course was excellent fun & as temperatures dropped below –10degC we continued the Club’s astronomical observations by seeing the most spectacular meteorite I’ve ever seen. Even our Skate Monster was put off his stride by this sight. Roy rounded off the skiing by taking us on a visit to the sewage works by the Bogie, I’m sure the river here is very picturesque but unfortunately the aroma is not quite so romantic. I’m not sure what George Cruickshank made of all this on his first trip out with the Club. PT
Sled Dog Race, 10/11th March.
|
|
The 8th annual UK Sled Dog Championships went ahead for the first time on snow in the Clash. In fact there was almost too much deep snow making it extremely hard going for the dogs. Lots of very hard work went into pisteing the trails & thanks should go out in particular to Lester Standen, Dick Sowden & Callum Macleod who spent many hours digging the snowmobile out of waist deep snow. Shane Murray, the race organiser, sent his thanks & made a small donation to the Club. Inuk was most excited by all these visitors to his forest & showed them who was boss, or at least tried to. I would be interested in receiving feedback on the event from any skiers who were there. Do you think it was a good idea? Did it spoil your skiing? Was it good publicity for the Clash Trails? PT |
SnSc – Insurance.
As Club members you are all covered by Snowsport Scotlands civil liability insurance to a level of £5 million. This basically covers you for any damage to persons or property you might do while skiing, as a Club we need this to be able to hold events in the Clash. Also there is some Personal Accident Cover, other than for ski jumping!!! (death £5,000, loss of limbs etc £50,000, dental £500). Hopefully we will never have to make use of these policies but I thought I should let you know they exist. I can provide further details if anyone wants. PT
New Members.
The Beeson’s, Mays & George Cruickshank are our latest members. Simon, Debbie, Peter & Georgie Beeson live conveniently close to the Clashindarroch Trails in Rhynie. Simon, a hill runner & organiser of the Tap O’Noth Hill Race, is now, offshore work permitting, a regular skier. Huntly based Nick May & Claudia Zeiske along with their children Rachel, Deborah & Michael are long time members of the Junior Ski Team. George Cruickshank comes from slightly further afield in Aberdeen & was persuaded to join the Club by Lester. A major acquisition for the Club is Chris Barton from Gordonstoun School. He is a very familiar figure on the Clash trails & over the years has made a huge contribution to nordic skiing, particularly in the Clash. PT

Final Bits & Pieces
The Newmans have just returned from skiing in the Czech Republic where they seem to have had a great time & would recommend it as a ski destination. Hopefully they will let us know more for the next newsletter – hint.
STOP PRESS: The postponed Gordonstoun Race will take place in the Clash on Sun 4th Mar. Races start at 12:00hrs.
Full Moon Stomp – Thu 8th Mar.
HNSC Open Championships – Sun 18th Mar.
