The sprints at Huntly have become a regular feature of the GB Masters over the last few years. This year a spanner was thrown into the well oiled machine of Huntly's sprints as Peter Thorn club secretary/results recorder/race director and general factotum was absent due to work commitments. Fortunately his meticulous pre-planning helped the day go off well
The races were divided up into two time trials for novice and elite competitors of 655m and 1135 metres respectively followed by knock out competitions in the afternoon. The knock out competitions were for novices, women and two competitions for the men. The elite competition was for the first fifteen finishers in the morning's time trial, the plate competition was for everybody else.
Frank Musgrave stepped into Peter's shoes as race director and did a good job keeping everyting more or less on schedule through the day. Paul Gray was chief marshall and Hilary Musgrave masterminded the timings with help from Trish Baron, Elaine Homyer and Sandy Thorn.
Competitors were a little bit down on previous years with Caringorm Biathlon and Nordic's team afflicted by injury and illness. Fiona Crossley made it up from Yorkshire and was rewarded by winning the women's time trial and a silver in the knock out. It was also good to see Marek Pasterny and his son Mic up and the teams fielded by the Army and RAF.
The star of the competition was Andrew Young who won both the men's elite time trial and the men's elite knock out competition, despite taking quite big tumble on Thusday night during a training session.
The women's knock out final was particularly worth watching with only 2 seconds separating the three racers, Deborah May, Fiona Crossley and Katy Homyer.
Thanks to everybody who helped with the event.
